Progressive Safe System for HGVs

What is a DVS Progressive Safe System?

The DVS Progressive Safe System (PSS) is an enhanced version of the existing DVS Safe System that fleet operators must install on their HGVs over 12T to legally travel and operate within Greater London from 28th October 2024.

This upgraded system shares the same purpose as the current DVS Safe System but incorporates increased intelligence and sophistication to further improve safety. The primary goal is to provide drivers with indirect vision and eliminate blind spots on the nearside of the vehicle.

Key Features

  1. Blind Spot Information System (BSIS)
    • Enhanced Detection: The BSIS can differentiate between stationary and moving objects, alerting the driver only when moving objects are detected. This reduces unnecessary alarms and improves driver focus and response times.
  2. Nearside Camera Monitoring System
    • Complete Blind Spot Elimination: The nearside camera system is designed to completely eliminate blind spots on the nearside of both the vehicle and its trailer, ensuring the driver has a clear view of this critical area.
  3. Moving Off Information System (MOIS)
    • Front Sensor Detection: Similar to the BSIS, the MOIS system can distinguish between stationary and moving objects. It alerts the driver only when moving objects are detected in front of the vehicle, enhancing safety during starts and stops.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Safety: The PSS provides superior detection and monitoring capabilities, significantly reducing the risk of accidents caused by blind spots.
  • Compliance: Ensures that HGVs over 12T comply with the latest regulations for operating within Greater London from 28th October 2024.
  • Driver Assistance: Advanced systems assist drivers by providing clear, real-time information about their surroundings, improving their situational awareness and decision-making.

The DVS Progressive Safe System represents a significant step forward in HGV safety technology, offering a sophisticated and intelligent solution to meet the demands of urban driving in Greater London.

Do I Require a DVS Progressive Safe System?

If your HGV has a DVS star rating of 0, 1, or 2 stars, or if you have been granted a DVS Safety Permit valid only until 2024, you will need to install a Progressive Safe System before reapplying for a new DVS Safety Permit.

For those planning to operate HGVs over 12T in gross weight within Greater London, it is essential to determine the star ratings of your vehicles. You can find this information on the Transport for London (TfL) website or by emailing us your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN). We can then confirm whether you will need to retrofit a Progressive Safe System.

According to TfL, over 211,000 HGVs will need to be equipped with a new DVS Progressive Safe System to comply with regulations before applying for the HGV Safety Permit. Ensure your vehicles are DVS compliant to avoid fines of up to £550 per day!
